Root Canal Treatment

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is applied to clean and treat the inflammation in the infected or non-vital dental pulp caused by decay or trauma. Conditions resulting from deep decay or trauma can indicate the beginning of an inflammatory process in the tooth’s nerve tissue, which manifests as symptoms like sensitivity to hot and cold, throbbing, night pain, and severe pain. Additionally, even without symptoms of pain or sensitivity, root canals in filled teeth or teeth reduced for crown-bridge procedures can become infected over time.

In non-vital teeth, where the nerve tissue is completely damaged, there is no pain, and if the patient does not attend routine check-ups, they may not be aware of the issue. In such cases, the prolonged presence of an infected tooth can result in inflammation known as apical osteitis, characterized by bone destruction at the root tip. This chronic inflammation, which may not present noticeable symptoms, can cause acute flare-ups, leading to swelling, pus discharge, and severe pain in the tooth. If not treated in time, the infection in the affected teeth can progress, leading to tooth loss. In advanced stages of infection, cystic formations can occur at the root tip.
