Orthodontic Treatment
What is Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that corrects crooked teeth and misaligned jaw relationships using medical appliances. Orthodontic treatment can be applied during the milk teeth period to eliminate problems caused by habits such as thumb sucking and lip biting during this time. Orthodontic treatment prevents permanent skeletal disorders of the jaw structure. The issue of mixed dentition is also within the scope of orthodontics. During this period, both milk teeth and permanent teeth are present in the mouth. When milk teeth are lost early and cannot guide the incoming permanent teeth, space issues in the mouth arise. The orthodontic field addresses these space issues. Additionally, jaw development continues during this period. Problems of jaw misalignment resulting from the lower and upper jaws not developing in harmony are also within the scope of orthodontics. During the permanent teeth period, orthodontics deals with misalignments in the tooth rows. Treatments for irregularities caused by gum diseases and for irregularities resulting from congenitally missing teeth or teeth lost later also fall under the scope of orthodontics.
Before starting orthodontic treatment, all cavities and gum diseases in the mouth should be treated. Whether fixed or removable, maintaining oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. If using a removable orthodontic appliance, it should be removed after meals, and the teeth should be brushed. The hygiene of the orthodontic appliance should also be maintained with the same care.
The brackets used in fixed orthodontic treatment are ideal areas for food particles to accumulate. Therefore, after meals, orthodontic toothbrushes should be used to meticulously clean the food particles between the brackets and wires. If proper oral hygiene is not maintained, cavities and gum problems will inevitably develop during orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic treatment is a long-term process that requires regular monthly check-ups. Therefore, it is important for the patient to continue orthodontic treatment with determination and not miss their appointments. If any breakage, detachment, or dislodgement occurs in the orthodontic appliance, it is necessary to consult the orthodontist immediately to avoid negatively affecting the treatment.
In orthodontic treatment, retention therapy is extremely important to maintain the new positions of the teeth. Therefore, adherence to retention therapy is essential.
