What are Laminate Veneers?

What are Laminate Veneers?

Porcelain laminates, popularly known as “leaf porcelain,” have gained popularity in recent years. They are preferred when teeth stains cannot be removed through whitening or when the shape and form of the teeth are unsatisfactory. They can also be used in cases where there are gaps between the teeth.

Laminate veneers differ from traditional porcelain crowns in both the construction process and the materials used. While porcelain crowns may require 1-2 mm of reduction from all surfaces of the teeth, laminates typically only require 0.5-1 mm of reduction from the front surface of the teeth; in some cases, no reduction is needed at all.

When are Laminate Veneers Preferred?

Laminate veneers can be chosen for a variety of situations, from discoloration caused by antibiotic use to mild crookedness, to improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth. They also offer solutions for teeth that are not the desired shape or size, for broken teeth, for teeth with excessive fillings, or for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment. Laminate veneers can also be used to close gaps between teeth.

How are Laminate Veneers Applied?

The first step for a patient deciding on this treatment is to take initial videos, photos, and intraoral measurements. These measurements, along with the patient’s desires and complaints, are sent to the lab. The dentist understands the patient’s needs and prepares a “mock-up” to create a preliminary trial that matches the patient’s requests. In this stage, the new teeth, designed according to the patient’s mouth structure, are fitted. The dentist and the patient together evaluate these new teeth for aesthetic appearance and function. Adjustments are made until the patient is satisfied, and then the final laminates are bonded to the teeth.

What Should Be Considered When Using Laminate Veneers?

With proper care, laminate veneers can last for many years. You should brush the veneers just like your natural teeth, using circular motions twice a day, and use dental floss regularly. Additionally:

  • Use mouth rinses to support oral hygiene.
  • Avoid biting and tearing very hard foods with the laminate veneers.
  • Break habits like nail-biting and pencil-chewing.
  • If you have a teeth grinding problem, do not neglect to use a night guard.

How Long Do Laminate Veneers Last?

Patients who pay attention to oral care and follow their doctor’s recommendations can use their laminate veneers comfortably for many years. The porcelain used for laminates is very durable, so wear and tear is not an issue.
